Here is Pastor Suzanne's message for February:
February is full of grand events that give us opportunity to show our devotion and commitment. The month begins with the Superbowl, the game that sports fans don’t miss and even non-sports fans will watch (if only for the halftime show and commercials.) Next comes Valentine’s Day, a good reminder that no matter how sappy it seems, it is always a good thing to tell those who are important to us that we love and appreciate them. Then we celebrate two of our nation’s most appreciated leaders on President’s Day. In the midst of all of these grand events, Lent arrives. It has a different tone. Rather than a time of excess and celebration, it is a somber time of self-reflection. It is an invitation to show our devotion and commitment to God through repentance, self-denial, and increased spiritual practices. We do this so that we might be more open and receptive to God’s grace and participate more fully in the joyous celebration of Easter. Lent lasts for 40 days, excluding Sundays. This is the same length of time that Jesus spent in the wilderness being tested by Satan. It also reminds us of the 40 days Noah spent on the ark and the 40 years the Israelites spent in the wilderness. It is a spiritual journey toward the cross. This year our Lenten series will be “Journey toward Hope.” We’ll travel with Jesus to the cross and discover the Hope that can be found amid life’s most difficult circumstances. The Journey begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22nd. We will have a service of Reflection and the Imposition of Ashes at 7pm. I hope you will join us on this “Journey toward Hope” this Lenten season as we grow in our devotion and commitment to God together. Blessings!
